the fly fishing

Fly Fishing for trophy Rainbow Trout is the primary focus at Stoney Lake Lodge
DLR Angler

Situated in the world famous Kamloops Rainbow Trout Region, fish in these waters are notorious for their incredible fighting abilities. Guests of the lodge have unlimited access to Stoney and Minnie Lakes. Minnie Lake is a 5 minute drive from the lodge, with both lakes offering opportunities to catch and release trout up to the double digits. Both Minnie and Stoney Lakes are surrounded by total private property. Limited visitation and angling pressure is the first draw to these nutrient rich bodies of water. A complete fishery waters management program is firmly in place, closely monitoring water levels/angling days/fish populations, natural and enhanced [Triploid & Diploid Rainbow Trout]. These lakes are strict Rainbow Trout only habitats.

the approach

At 3500 feet in elevation, the ice-off period can vary from season to season. Normally, give or take a week, the lakes become ice-free around May 1st. Due to maximum Southern exposure, common Southerly winds speed up a sometimes minimal turn-over phase. The Spring season / temperatures usually extend to the end of June. The warmer Summer fishery usually runs from mid July to mid August. The normal Fall phase extends to around November 1st, where the ice-on period usually occurs.

THE SPRING SEASON | MAY - JULY
DLR Trout

These are the best months to experience the Chironomid emergence. In the earliest part of the season, hatches seriously revolve around surface temperatures, therefore the warmest part (between 10:00 am & 2:00 pm) are more predictable, while sun and wind are still the biggest factor. During the same Spring season, Scuds (freshwater Shrimp), Leeches, Darner and Gomphus Dragonfly Nymphs and most of the traditional attractor patterns will catch fish. Floating lines, intermediate, and up to type 3 sinking are recommended fly-lines for this part of the season.

THE SUMMER SEASON | MID JULY- MID AUGUST
Resident Pelican

This time of the year generally has the least wind, warmest temperatures and the longest daylight opportunities. Mild surface algae blooms can create a natural "umbrella effect", allowing the cooler preferred temperatures within normal reach. The largest of the Stoney and Minnie Rainbows are caught during the warmer water phases. Big Leeches, Huge Dragonfly imitations and unorthodox attractor flies work like magic throughout the summer. Dry Fly opportunities (Traveling Sedge / attractors) can occur during cooler evenings and drastic temperature changes. Fast sinking Fly Lines (type 4 to type 7) and tippets of 6 pound and greater are the recommended choices during the warmer months.

THE FALL SEASON | MID AUGUST - NOVEMBER 01
New Catch

The Fall season usually spans from mid August to November 1st. Periodic Chironomid fishing can take place, as well as the traditional Leeches, Dragonflies, Scuds and most of the usual attractors. As the season progresses closer to ice-on, large rainbows can sometimes be caught in very shallow water.
