The scenery at Douglas lake
Ranch is dominated by v
ast areas of rolling hills, covered with tufts of
precious bunchgrass. This is one of the largest expanses of
bunchgrass left in the world and is best described as "Big Sky
Country". As a working cattle ranch we have many fenced pastures as well
as large areas of farmland. In addition there are forested areas,
rivers and approximately 40 lakes. Roads vary from paved secondary highways
to dirt roads and wagon rails.
The Ranch is a conglomerate of many small ranches that
were used over the years. These small ranches all have their individual
flavor and characteristic scenery. You will see example of this at Hatheume
Cow Camp, Home Ranch, Dry Farm Cow Camp, as well as Louis Corrals Cow Camp.
In addition you will view more recent buildings such as the Big House (a
stately log hunting lodge built in the 1960's) and Stoney Lake Lodge (an
exquisite lodge built in 1994). Fort Douglas (the original set of the
Hawkeye TV Series found a home here at Douglas Lake Ranch and was placed in
an area where a 360 degree scan will not yield on man-made structure.
A small grove of trees, however, some 150 yards from The Fort, allows ample
cover for equipment, trucks, etc.
Douglas Lake Ranch is privately owned and access to the
ranchland is tightly controlled at all times. Many areas of the Ranch are
inaccessible to the general public, which allows for total privacy and
uninterrupted shooting schedules, saving you precious time and money.
